Wrong Way Driver Fatally Hits Another Car on Loop 202

PHOENIX, AZ –

A tragic wrong-way collision on Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway near Elliot Road claimed the lives of two young drivers early Sunday morning.

According to reports from AZFamily, the accident occurred around 2 a.m. when 22-year-old Uriel Sanchez was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Loop 202.

Elliot Road can be dangerous and people need to slow down.

Sanchez’s vehicle collided head-on with a car driven by 19-year-old Jordon Lewis near West Elliot Road. The impact was severe, and both drivers, Sanchez and Lewis, were pronounced dead at the scene by rescue personnel. A third vehicle was involved in the crash, but fortunately, the driver escaped without injury.

Initial investigations suggest that impairment may have contributed to the fatal accident. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether Sanchez or Lewis were under the influence at the time of the crash, but it remains a significant factor in their ongoing investigation. Additionally, it was noted that one of the deceased drivers was not wearing a seatbelt, though details have not been fully disclosed.

The accident prompted authorities to close the affected section of Loop 202 for several hours while they conducted a thorough investigation. The freeway remained closed until approximately 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, causing significant traffic delays at other Phoenix intersections in the area.

This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of adhering to traffic laws and safety measures, such as wearing seatbelts. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash as the community mourns the loss of two young lives.
